Our Projects: MOZAMBIQUE

project vesselWe work towards establishing a sanctuary for the endangered Humpback dolphins living in the waters off Inhaca Island (Bay of Maputo), in cooperation with the Natural History Museum and University of Maputo.

Maiden Voyage of the “Stenela”

The first dolphin survey boat in Mozambique, named “Stenela”, was exhibited on the fourth annual tourism fair in Maputo in mid May and presented to the public for the first time. Two posters explained objects and aims of the project to the visitors, including Mozambique’s Prime Minister, Tourism Minister, other Government members, and numerous diplomats of foreign representations. Finally, on May 20, the “Stenela” was ready for her maiden voyage in Maputo Bay, with Almeida Guissamulo and his team onboard. Right on the first trip to Inhaca Island they had to rescue a fishing boat in a choppy sea, whose engine was out of order, towing it back to the harbor. An important step for the continuation of the project to protect the endangered Humpback humbpack dolphin jumpingdolphins in Mozambique has thus been successfully realized in spite of innumerable adversities. In the name of Almeida Guissamulo and his team of Maputo University, we would like to thank everyone who supports this project with a big or small donation. A special thanks goes to the SOS (Save Our Seas) Foundation and the German environmental organization Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH).
